If you have been paying attention you have read the PCModer articles we wrote that explained how to create a Flash or .flv video, but how do you get it on your web site?? Well you may have tried to post the file alone and noticed that it will not play...Congrats on your effort, nice try but that won't work! You have to have a player on your site for Flash videos to play. There are a few out there you can pay for but we have a Free Flash Web player you can use. It is JW Player and works quite well.

You will need to get the "player.swf" file from JW player and put it on your site. Once that is done you simply put some HTML in your site code and then as if by magic your site is playing Flash Videos.

Here is some sample code for you to use:

<object id="player" classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000" name="player" width="600" height="400">
<param name="movie" value="player.swf" />
<param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" />
<param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" />

<param name="flashvars" value="file=YOUR_FLASH_VIDEO.flv&image=preview.jpg" />

The preview.jpg is any picture you want in the window of the player when the video player loads and is not yet playing. The other options are fairly self explanatory. Getting Flash to play on your site can be confusing until you realize you need software on you site in addition to the flash file to get it to play. This is great if you do not want to have to depend on Youtube or some other provider to host your videos.

Big Brother Google is watching

Google has updated its browser toolbar after the application was caught tracking urls even when specifically "disabled" by the user. That means Google was tracking where you went on the internet even with the application turned off.....wow....Big Brother really is watching.

In a Monday blog Post, Harvard professor and noted Google critic Ben Edelmen provided evidence of the Google toolbar transmitting data back to the Mountain View Chocolate Factory after he chose to disable the application in the browser window he was currently using.

"The feature is described as 'enhanced' and 'helpful,' and Google chooses to tout it with a prominence that indicates Google views the feature as important," Edelman said. "Moreover, the accept button features bold type plus a jumbo size (more than twice as large as the button to decline). And the accept button has the focus - so merely pressing Space or Enter (easy to do accidentally) serves to activate Enhanced Features without any further confirmation."

The bug affects Google Toolbar versions 6.3.911.1819 through 6.4.1311.42 for Internet Explorer. An update that fixes the bug is now available here, and the company intends to automatically update users' tool bars sometime today.

BBS Beginning of the Internet?

AddThis Social Bookmark Button

Once upon a time, a long time ago, in a Galaxy Far, Far away......No wait...that's a different story, but it does seem appropriate. It seems forever ago that the Internet did not exist and early PC users were finding ways to communicate, exchange files, programs, data, and ideas. Before we had the internet we had phones and modems. I remember how excited I was to get my first 300 baud modem....yea that’s right I said 300 baud. These Bulletin Board Systems or BBS systems were the cutting edge for PC users and if you were a Sysop (pronounced SIS OP) you were a man of power and influence. Girls would flock to your door, people would give you free meals at the best restaurants, you would have money to burn...oh wait...sorry that was in the Galaxy far away...not the one I lived in.

In any case if you were a Sysop you did get a certain amount of respect for taking the trouble in helping the user community by paying for an extra phone line (s) and dedicating a PC to the task of running the BBS. Yes I was a Sysop and it was rewarding to hear the phone ring and see users taking advantage of my system. There were online games (you took turns as you dialed in), a sort of early email which was rather interesting.

If you wanted to send an email to a friend far away you would log into the BBS and send it. Late at night the BBS would call the next BBS in the chain to relay the messages for that day, and then that one would call the next and so on and so on. Usually this chain would be local calls from BBS to BBS across the country but there were a few gaps and the Sysop's of the BBSs that were not close enough forked over the cost to pay for a long distance call...these were the heroes. It usually took a day or two for your email to get across the country, sometimes it never got there but usually it did.

A BBS was also a great place to exchange programs and files, talk about computers etc. They were very much like Forums are today but much slower and more local. If you wanted you could usually go see someone you had messaged with as every one was within local calling distance. Today the BBS us almost unheard of but should be remembered. The BBS was the first main stream way for the average user to have what we all take for granted today, the internet. Granted it was more limited but the basic functionality was all there. Games were fun too....and by the way, all you former BBSers know you have to call right at midnight to be the first one to get a turn in on Space Empire. So set your alarms or I will log in before you and destroy your planets tonight!!!

Crazy Apple Rumor-Tablet is ZERO thickness

AddThis Social Bookmark Button

Remember folks you heard it hear first! PCModer.com has learned via inside sources at Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) why they are so excited about the new Mac Tablet! This is an exclusive PCModer.com scoop and we are proud to bring it to you. There are many crazy Mac rumors out there but we have the best one yet! Our sources have informed us that Apple has made an unbelievable breakthrough in the thin tablet technology. Sources tell us that Apple will announce that this will be the thinnest device EVER. When we say thin we mean it. The new tablet will be the first ZERO thickness device EVER. That’s right it will have no thickness! Apple has managed to make the first truly two dimensional tablet. As you know previous to this all computing devices had three dimensions, a measurable length, width and height. This new tablet has only length and width, but no height!

Now you can see why Apple has been so tight lipped. A technological breakthrough like this needs to be kept under raps and is going to scoop the market. Our source tells us that the researchers at Apple stumbled on this technology when they were using nanobots to make ever thinner and thinner devices. We do not know the specifics of the technology but we have learned that there are some serious physics involved.This new technology while exciting has also presented some new problems.

Having zero thickness our source tells us that there were safety concerns. For example if someone brushed up against the tablet they would injure themselves. To quote him/her “Think about it, a razor is sharp due to having a very thin edge. This tablet has the thinnest edge ever. If for example you picked it up by it’s edge you could slice off your fingers. It was a very real concern. This would not be good for sales.” Thus having the sharpest edge allowed by physics could have disadvantages. Once the prototype device was constructed it turned out that this was not a problem after all. The device having zero thickness actually passes through matter and does not break the atomic bonds of the atoms close to each other…Therefore it passes through objects and does not “cut” them, in the traditional sense. This presented another problem. During manufacturing the prototype tablet was dropped on edge and it passed through the floor. Our source said “We were scared shitless when it was dropped." and  “We thought Steve would have our ass for loosing it.” He went on “It just like, went into the floor and disappeared man.” Fortunately the device was stopped as it turned flat landing safely on the level below the research lab.

Early testers of the table have called it “Way cool”, “Awesome” and “Wicked Thin”. We hope to get our hands on one to review soon. We wanted to get the word out to the world about this important breakthrough that is set to revolutionize computing as we know it.

The Ultimate PC Station

If you are REALLY REALLY serious about your PC use and your gaming/work environment take a look at this thing. It looks like something from the Matrix meets Star Wars meets Alien. When you strap this thing on you will become one with the Borg.....resistance is futile! This chair does have a major cool factor though, and the price to match....it STARTS at $5000. The manufacture NovelQuest has two models, this is the CHEAP one! We hear the top of the line model can go as high as $50,000. Even this...base...model has some great features. It can hold one to three monitors, has 5.1 surround sound with the sub in the seat, the entire station can tilt for maximum comfort, a built in control panel, and yes....even a cup holder. This cool looking design seems like it would be an awesome place for online gaming to give you that total immersion experience. Plus did we say you would look cool? If you have a few grand to part with this may be some place to put it.

Since we were looking at this we decided to find out what else was out there (or could we build one for ourselves). A quick search of Ebay found the Nethrone Chair. At $1250 it is much cheaper but it looks like it does a lot of what the NovelQuest model does. It does look a bit less robust and also it only holds one monitor (but we guess you could mod this to hold 3).

Beyond the I wanna look cool and this is neat toy perspective there actually could be a real use for this for those with back issues or people who have a problem sitting all day at a computer....maybe you should ask the boss for one!!!!
